Who would have thought when John Jeffers, a fourteen-year-old farmer’s son left Courtmacsherry in 1855 for a job as a grocer’s messenger boy in Bandon that it would grow into one of West Cork’s best known and much-loved family businesses? From this humble beginning, Jeffers become one of the biggest employers in the local area through their Grocery, Bakery, Cafe, Auctioneering, Milling, Piggery and Wholesale businesses. “You fed half the town,” shares one of the staff.
Read how as Protestant merchants Jeffers navigate Ireland’s War of Independence and Civil War and keep their staff employed during World War II. In 1960 Jeffers open the first supermarket in West Cork, where customers bring their lists to the counter need to be taught how to shop for themselves. Guns are sold alongside groceries when Mervyn Jeffers open the Firearms business, while Peter and David Jeffers provide church organs for Papal visits through the Music and Electrical shop.
An entrepreneurial family with a drive for hard work alongside an enduring Christian faith, this book tracks Jeffers’ innovation from the nineteenth century up to and including the music businesses of the present day.
